Internet Governance Forum to hold stock-taking session in Geneva on Feb 13

Geneva, Feb 08: Following the first-ever gathering of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), held in Athens from 30 October to 2 November 2006, a special stock-taking session will take place next Tuesday, 13 February, at Geneva’s Palais des Nations where Forum participants will assess the achievements of the inaugural meeting and pave the way forward to the next phase of the Forum taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 12 to 15 November.

Next week’s meeting will be attended by a host of experts specializing in various aspects of Internet governance, such as freedom of expression on the Net, cybersecurity, multilingualism and connectivity in developing countries. Participants will evaluate the progress made at the opening meeting and make suggestions with regard to the preparation of the Rio meeting.

The meeting will follow consultations by members of the Forum’s Advisory Group, which will gather in Geneva on 12 February to assess their own functioning and to discuss how to move forward in the preparations of the second IGF meeting. The Advisory Group comprises 46 people, representing all regions and all stakeholder groups.

Tuesday’s meeting will be chaired by the Secretary-General’s Special Adviser for Internet Governance, Nitin Desai, who served as his representative in Athens. The Executive Coordinator of the IGF Secretariat, Markus Kummer, will introduce a paper synthesizing all contributions received on the IGF Web site.
