UK Department for International Development (DFID) has recently released the second Institutional Strategy between the Department and the UN World Food Programme (WFP). According to DFID, "the partnership is testament to the critical importance both organisations attach to reducing the rising number of people suffering from hunger and malnutrition."
WFP, created in 1963 as the food aid arm of the UN system, is the worlds largest humanitarian agency. DFID is responsible for overseeing UK Government policy towards WFP. The IS provides a framework for action for 2005-8 and provides £5 million a year in capacity-building support to WFP.
The IS aims to enhance WFPs:
1) preparedness for, and ability to respond to, humanitarian crises;
2) organisational learning and knowledge management;
3) role in developing national and regional capacities to prevent and respond to food emergencies.
