Ethiopian and Swedish terminologists will cooperate through an agreement recently reached between the National Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ethiopia (NATIE) and the Swedish Centre for Terminology (TNC).
A cooperation framework between the two institutions was established during a UNESCO supported study tour to Sweden by NATIE chairman Yissakor Beyene from 29 August to 4 September 2005.
The study tour provided an opportunity for training, to exchange information on projects being developed by TNC as well as to facilitate the establishment of contacts with key Swedish institutions working in the fields of terminology, translation and interpretation.
The training and cooperation agreement will support ongoing efforts in Ethiopia to reinforce the presence of Ethiopian languages in the digital environment, to foster the production of local content and support capacity-building of information professionals.
One of the first tangible outputs of the cooperation agreement will be a two-week terminology course to be held in Ethiopia during the spring of 2006. The course will target information professionals, academics and policy makers working in the area of standardization.
The Swedish Centre for Terminology, that was established in 1941, focuses on identifying and addressing the terminological needs of Swedish society and language. A national centre supported by the Ministry of Industry, Employment and Communications, TNC works extensively with government, industry, academic institutions and other organizations to provide terminological support services and training in a variety of subject fields.
