Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs Laurens Jan Brinkhorst has submitted his plans of introducing commercial digital radio to the House of Representatives. This will help commercial broadcasters to air programmes with a perfect sound quality, using the Terrestrial Digital Audio Broadcast (TDAB) technique.
Using TDAB, commercial broadcasters will be able to gain competitive advantage in the market by airing value-added information services. The range of such services will be one of the assessment criteria for granting licenses to the private players.
Official sources have said that the licenses will be allocated for a period of fifteen years. However, a detailed study on the spectrum allocation for TADB shall be undertaken before introducing digital radio.
